Research has shown that only 1 in 10 Americans eats the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day. Eating fruits and veggies is important, but many of us struggle to work these foods into our diets. Reasons for this vary, but some include cost, availability, preparation time, and issues with taste. Despite the difficulties, there are many reasons why we should all eat more fruits and vegetables! The healthy fiber in fruits and vegetables can help keep constipation away, lower cholesterol, and reduce the risk of cancer. So how can you make space in your diet for more fruits and vegetables? Read on for some tips!

  1. Visit the frozen foods aisle – Although whole fresh fruits and vegetables are ideal, don’t forget frozen fruits and vegetables. Frozen vegetables are still packed with nutrients and many of them are easy to steam in the microwave in just a few minutes. Frozen fruits can make a great addition to a smoothie or defrost and add as a side dish to your lunch or dinner, or warm and drizzle a bit of honey for a great dessert.
  2. Count condiments – Sauces and purees like unsweetened applesauce or salsa count towards your goals too. Add some parsley, dill or cilantro for more nutrients and flavor.
  3. Yes, you CAN – Check out canned chickpeas and black beans. These can count for one serving of vegetables per day, and they are filled with protein and fiber to keep you feeling full. Look for low sodium or no sodium versions. Rinsing them can help reduce sodium too.
  4. Consistency is key – Try to incorporate fruits and vegetables at every meal. Each serving adds up!

Try these tips and watch your fruit and vegetable servings soar!
