Michael A. Brehm, PhD

Associate Professor of Molecular Medicine,

The Harvey A. Shultz Chair in Diabetes,

Associate Director, UMass Chan Diabetes Center of Excellence,

Co-Director, UMass Chan Humanized Mouse Core

Investigator, JDRF Center of Excellence in New England

Dr. Brehm works with unique animal models with human immune responses to investigate approaches to downregulate as well as activate the human immune system for treatments of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and cancer. His laboratory examines human beta cells from individuals with T1D in vivo as they interact with intact immune systems from those same donors. The ultimate goal is to understand the etiology and pathogenesis of autoimmune T1D in order to develop new therapies or drugs for personalized medicine.

 Mina Seedhom, PhD

Mina Seedhom, PhD, leads Brehm lab experiments for the JDRF Center of Excellence in New England collaborative to reconstruct human type 1 diabetes using stem cell-derived islets from T1D patients inside of our novel immunodeficient mouse models to observe the interactions between insulin-producing beta cells and immune cells in vivo

Uhlmans Ice Cream

Dr. Brehm arranged for the Uhlman's ice cream truck to visit on a beautiful summer afternoon to treat the lab for an ice cream break.
