Meet Nemo

Captain Nemo and squid decorative image
NEMO, a Latin word meaning "no one", was chosen as the name for our first Massively Parallel Deep Sequencer.
Captain NEMO, Master of the "Deep", was a brilliant scientist from the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, who used his skills to explore and master the unknown depths.
Sequencing instruments added later to our core follow that inspiration with names related to deep sea exploration, sea monsters, and other mythological creatures.

Nemo transitioned from a Solexa 1G to a GA IIX Genome Analyzer before being retired in favor of newer, higher-throughput instruments (going from 30 million paired-end reads produced per run up to a maximum of 12 billion on our NovaSeq 6000). Visit our Equipment page for an overview of the instruments available at the Deep Sequencing Core and its joint facilities (the Molecular Biology Core Labs and the PacBio Core Enterprise).
Nemo and the other Sequencing Core Labs instruments can be viewed in a virtual tour of our facility, which offers an inside look at the lab and some of the specialized equipment used for second- and third- gen sequencing platforms: https://www.umassmed.edu/research/cores/virtual-tours/. Tours of other Research Cores at UMass Chan Medical School are available for viewing as well.

Sequencing by Synthesis methods have come a long way since the introduction of the Genome Analyzer. Please visit the vendor's website for current publications and news about the latest use of the technology in a variety of applications:  https://www.illumina.com/science/publications.html.  Our Deep Sequencing Core Labs Resources page also has a list of publications of interest.
