CPP

What is CPP?

Child Parent Psychotherapy is a type of therapy specifically designed for young children who have experienced traumatic life events. CPP understands that each child is unique and therefore therapy is tailored to the child’s age and developmental status.

 Who can use CPP?

CPP is designed for young children between the ages of 0 and 5 who have significant emotional and behavioral problems related to experiencing a traumatic event or a series of traumatic events.

How does CPP work?

The ultimate goal of CPP is to strengthen the caregiver-child relationship. Children and parent or caregiver will attend weekly hour-long sessions for an average of about 1 year, though the length of treatment can vary. Treatment for infants may focus on helping the caregiver understand what the caregiver and child have gone through and how this might affect the child’s behavior and development. Treatments for toddlers and preschoolers may include a more active component such as play to help the caregiver help the child.

What are the benefits of CPP?

  • Reduces your child’s trauma related symptoms (i.e. nightmares, lack of positive emotions, easily frightened, etc.)
  • Reduces your child’s worry feelings and/or sad feelings
  • Builds upon your child’s ability to manage their emotions
  • Increases your child’s ability to think, reason, and learn
  • Improves behavioral problems such as anger or attention difficulties
  • Improves a caregiver’s ability to understand what a child is feeling and how to help
