Research Focus - Biomarkers of the Modifiable Component of Breast Cancer Risk

  • Breast milk research program: developed a biobank of bilateral breast milk samples from over 1,000 women of varied breast cancer risk with long-term follow-up
  • Diet intervention to reduce breast cancer risk: ongoing NCI-funded randomized clinical trial assessing the effects of increased fruit and vegetable consumption on the inflammatory and DNA methylation profiles in breast milk
  • Breastmilk as a liquid biopsy: ongoing DoD-funded study assessing somatic mutation load and aberrant DNA methylation profile in sloughed epithelial cells from the breast milk of BRCA mutation carriers
