Student Mentoring

Each UMass Chan Medical School student is assigned to a Mentor in their Learning Community House. The student’s House Mentor provides guidance on many issues ranging from academic achievement, career guidance, professionalism development, and personal support. During years 1, 2, and 3 of medical school, House Mentors also serve as teachers of doctoring and clinical skills for their assigned students. In short, House Mentors are responsible for shepherding their students through medical school from matriculation through graduation.

Copies of student’s evaluations, grade reports, and administrative letters are sent to the student’s House Mentor. The responsibility of the House Mentor includes general support, periodic review of the student’s academic performance, assistance/advice in scheduling the third-year clerkship blocks and selecting fourth-year electives. Guidance is offered in career choice and residency selection.
