Optional Practical Training 24-Month STEM Extension
New STEM OPT Ruling - May 10, 2016
After months of watching the progress on the new STEM OPT Rule, F-1 students received welcome news on Friday, March 11, 2016, when the U.S. Department of Homeland Security published a Final Rule extending and expanding the F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) for certain Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) majors.

Information for Students CURRENTLY on 17-month STEM OPT Extension
GSBS Alumni who are currently in a period of authorized 17-month STEM OPT may be eligible to extend their OPT by an additional 7 months if their current period of authorized OPT expires on or after October 7, 2016. Please contact email@example.com to determine if you are eligible for a 7-month STEM OPT extension.
Information for Students CURRENTLY in initial 12-month period of Post-Completion OPT
GSBS alumni who are currently in their initial 12-month period of post-completion OPT may be eligible to apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension under the new 24-month STEM OPT rule. Please contact the Immigration Services Office at firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an appointment with an Immigration Specialist.
