According to the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), “Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine”. Therapies are considered complementary when they’re used in addition to conventional treatment to reinforce the immune system, relieve symptoms, and enhance the effectiveness of conventional therapies. The same treatment may be considered alternative if it is used instead of conventional treatment. Types of CAM include: natural products such as herbal medicines; mind-body medicine which includes meditation, yoga, acupuncture, deep breathing, guided imagery, qi gong, hypnotherapy, tai chi, and progressive relaxation; manipulative and body-based practices including massage therapy, and spinal manipulation; and additional therapies that are listed under “other” which include Reiki, healing touch, movement therapies, Traditional Chinese Medicine, traditional healers, homeopathy and naturopathy.
