The Physical Activity page provides information and resources to support wellness interventions with patients/clients.
Addressing Physical Activity is Important
If you could prescribe a treatment that would: improve mood, decrease anxiety, help to focus attention, improve sleep, replace or distract from addictive behaviors, improve cognition, increase heart and lung capacity, improve bone density, strengthen muscles, and decrease the risk of dementia, cardiovascular disease, and many forms of cancer- for free- would you prescribe it? These are some of the benefits of physical activity.
In addition, physical activity helps us all to do things we enjoy and need to do. Research is also showing that physical activity can be a key component or even a primary treatment for depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline with age or related to psychiatric illness. Physical activity also helps to control weight.
