Welcome to the Volkert Lab at the UMass Chan Medical School We are studying how the OXR family of genes function to control cellular resistance to oxidative stress and their roles in protecting neuronal cells from neurodegeneration. We are exploring the therapeutic potential of the OXR1 gene to prevent or delay neurodegeneration and are testing this using an AAV-OXR1 delivery system to prevent degeneration of retinal neurons in mouse models of human blindness diseases.
