Our Underserved Community

As a community-based residency, we are committed to supporting organizations who offer aid to the most vulnerable members of our society.

Local Demographics

North Central Massachusetts includes the urban cities of Fitchburg, Gardner, and Leominster, and the smaller and more rural surrounding towns of Ashburnham, Ashby, Ayer, Devens, Harvard, Hubbardston, Lunenburg, Shirley, Templeton, Townsend, Winchendon, and Westminster. The most recent population estimate from just before the 2020 Census is that these cities and towns have a combined population of about 200,000. The area is also home to a large and growing number of Portuguese speakers from Brazil. In fact, the greatest number of foreign-born residents from any single country in the Fitchburg and Leominster area were from Brazil (9.3% of foreign-born residents.)

According to recent census data, the city of Fitchburg has a population of just over 40,000 and just over 75% held a high school degree, while 15% had attained a college degree.

Over the past several years, unemployment rates have risen above state averages. The most recent figures released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the unemployment rate in the Leominster, Fitchburg, and Gardner reporting area was 10%. This number is significantly higher than the state average of 7.4% for the same time period. The average household income in Leominster was recently estimated at about $60,000 with Fitchburg’s average just over $54,000. There is great need in our communities for high quality, comprehensive medical care.
