Residency Overview

The University of Massachusetts Dermatology Residency Program began in 1991. Three residents are accepted each year into the program. The academic offices and Jeffrey D. Bernhard Library are located at the UMass Memorial Health Care Hahnemann Campus. Clinics are held at the Hahnemann Campus and in the Ambulatory Care Center at the University Campus. A couple of residents have one half day clinic at UMass Memorial Clinton Hospital and UMass Memorial Health Alliance Hospital Leominster. Residents see inpatient consultations at two hospitals- the University and Memorial campuses of UMMHC. Each resident spends mornings one month per year in the dermatopathology offices on the Biotech campus adjacent to the University campus. The University campus includes the UMass Chan Medical School.

Practicing primarily at two ambulatory sites allows our residents to maintain continuity of care for their patients (95% of clinics are "continuity clinics"), an important element of the program's success. Continuity clinics include weekly medical dermatology, pediatric dermatology, and procedural dermatology sessions. There are rotations through laser, cosmetic, epidermolysis bullosa, genodermatoses, transplant, and vitiligo clinics. The collegial group with diverse faculty interests creates an ideal training environment.
