Name at least TWO locations where anastamotic blood flow might be established that could nourish carotid territory if the left internal carotid artery were slowly and progressively occluded by the development of plaque near its bifurcation in the neck.

  • Between the external carotid and intracranial parts of the internal carotid by connections between expanded facial artery and ophthalmic artery branches in the orbit.
  • Between the right carotid circulation and the left carotid circulation via an expanded anterior communicating artery.
  • Between the vertebral-basilar and carotid circulations on the left via an expanded posterior communicating artery.
  • Between small cortical branches in the border zones.
