Residency Training Program

Application Requirements

Post Graduate Residency Training Program

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in the UMass Chan Medical School Psychiatry Residency Training Program. In making decisions about interviews we review the entire application. We want to recruit a group of trainees from diverse backgrounds who have had a wide range of experiences.

1. All applications for the General Psychiatry Program must be submitted via ERAS. Applications to the Combined Programs (either integrated Adult/Child Psychiatry or Psychiatry/Neurology) are also submitted via ERAS. We regret that we cannot respond to queries about our interview criteria. Nor can we accept any applications or CV's sent by email outside of ERAS.

2. Application Requirements:

  • Medical school transcript
  • Dean's letter (MSPE)
  • 3 Letters of recommendation
    • At least one letter should be from a psychiatrist familiar with your work
    • It is recommended that one letter be from a pediatrician, internal medicine, or family practice attending who supervised you on a required rotation
    • Applicants to the combined neurology/psychiatry track should have one letter from a neurologist familiar with your work
  • CV
  • Personal statement
  • ECFMG certificate if applicable
  • USMLE/COMLEX Scores: We do not use absolute cutoffs for USMLE Scores or COMLEX Scores. Part I is required to interview; Part II CK and CS are required for ranking; Part III required for promotion to PGY-3. We will be flexible on this requirement if the applicant indicates a COVID-related delay.

3. Any applicant who graduated from medical school prior to the current academic year is expected to have passed USMLE Step 3.

4. Because communication skills are the core of psychiatric skills, we require absolute fluency in spoken and written English.

International Medical Graduates

In addition to the above, the following items apply to international graduates:

1. We do not sponsor H visas except in very rare circumstances. We do accept J-1 visas.

2. We require international graduates to have had one year of clinical experience in the United States (or Canada, if Canadian citizen).

3. International medical graduates must possess a valid ECFMG certificate.

4. International medical graduates need to have graduated from medical school within the past 5 years.

5. We are unable to respond to email queries about our interview criteria.

6. We do not offer observerships or externships.

Thank you very much for your attention to these important details.
