The Structure of the Internship

Outpatient Assessment and Treatment

UMass Chan Medical School Electives

Department of Medicine/Division of Behavioral Medicine

BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE

Opportunities to lead or co-lead symptom-focused groups are available and encouraged. Groups include compulsive eating, panic disorder, chronic pain, smoking cessation, asthma, weight loss, gastric bypass support, chronic illness self-management, early-stage breast cancer, recurrent cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, stress reduction, and women's wellness group.

If desired, interns may choose to concentrate on a particular population within behavioral medicine, and interns with specific interests may participate in program development in that area in conjunction with faculty members. Opportunities to participate in or conduct research projects are also available. Didactic offerings within Behavioral Medicine include weekly teaching rounds, case conferences, and monthly research methods seminars. Interns commit to between 5 and 16 hours/week, and receive approximately one hour of individual and/or group supervision for three clinical hours. Clinical supervision is provided by Elizabeth Austin, Ph.D., Director of Training, and by other doctoral-level clinical psychologists in the Behavioral Medicine Clinic. Please feel free to contact Dr. Austin with any questions about this elective.
