The nationally recognized UMass Depression Center, anchored in the UMass Chan Medical School Department of Psychiatry, with its clinical partner, UMassMemorial Health Care, provides teaching, education and clinical care through evidence-based psychiatric treatment and the use of validated, research-based diagnostics and symptom-rating techniques.
The Depression Center is dedicated to dramatically advancing our understanding and treatment of depression, bipolar disorder and related mood disorders. As a leader in the field,
the Depression Center takes a progressive, recovery-driven
approach to depression based on:
- reducing stigma
- promoting and encouraging treatment
- recognizing that recovery needs direct participation by the patient and their family members
- accepting that prescription drugs, when appropriate, are best viewed as one ingredient of a comprehensive, successful treatment program.
Joining the best: The National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC)
Since 2011, the UMass Depression Center has been a member of the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC), a select group of the country’s leading depression and academic medical centers of mood disorders that includes Harvard University (Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital), Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania, among others.
A distinguishing characteristic of our Center is the ability to take advantage of
an expansive clinical care system with faculty experts in depression and
bipolar disorders in all age groups, from across multiple departments at the
University, and integrating mood disorders treatment and research in mental
health and non-traditional mental health settings.
