Curriculum

First Year Overview: The first year of fellowship is designed to give trainees exposure to a wide variety of ill and injured children, so that by the end of the year fellows are comfortable with the initial evaluation and stabilization of all manner of pediatric emergency patients. Through a combination of didactic sessions and direct patient care experiences, fellows will learn the management of the most common emergency conditions and procedures in pediatric patients. 

In addition to their clinical experiences, fellows will participate in the weekly fellow’s educational conference, and will begin to develop their own teaching skills through their involvement in the education of both medical students and residents.  Fellows will begin to conceptualize and implement a scholarly activity with the assistance of mentors both within the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and additional mentors identified from within the Departments of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. 

 Second Year Overview: The second year of fellowship is designed to give fellows continued exposure to critically ill children, and to prepare the fellow for the assumption of greater responsibilities including supervising trainees and managing the pediatric emergency department in an attending role. Fellows will continue to develop proficiency in their procedural skills and will have the opportunity to assist junior trainees as they develop their own procedural skills. Second year fellows will gain experience managing referrals and the general operation of the PED while under the supervision of an experienced attending PEM physician. Fellows will have progressive responsibility throughout the year, so that by the second half of the year they will begin to function at the level of a junior attending. In addition, fellows will continue to develop their teaching skills and lecture portfolio and will have expanding teaching responsibilities of junior learners within the PED. Fellows involved in scholarly activity will continue to work on their project, with the goal of completing data collection by the end of the second year of fellowship.

Third Year Overview: The final year of fellowship is designed so that fellows become proficient in all aspects of managing a busy tertiary care pediatric emergency department (PED).  This will include gaining a greater knowledge of the administrative duties required of an attending PEM physician. Fellows are allowed to function in the role of an attending, all while having faculty backup on site and readily available for consultation.  Fellows will be given the autonomy to independently care for PED patients, as well as supervise junior fellows, residents, and medical students in all patient management decisions.  Third year fellows will gain further experience in teaching and overseeing junior trainees, and will conclude their scholarly activity.
