South Road crosswalk, sidewalk improvements on Worcester campus begin March 22

Construction to improve pedestrian safety and access to the South Road Garage on the Worcester campus of UMass Medical School will resume on Monday, March 22.

An initial phase was completed last fall, with roadway and infrastructure improvements. The next phase is working to complete a raised crosswalk from the garage to the north side of the street near the covered walkway, and installation of new sidewalks, lighting and landscaping.

Completion of the project will take approximately six weeks.

During construction of the raised crosswalk, pedestrians will be detoured around the construction area.

Two-way vehicle traffic will be maintained by reducing travel to one lane in each direction. Work in the road begins on the south side, closest to the garage, with traffic shifted to the north. When that half is completed, the pattern will be reversed, with traffic shifted to the south side.

Drivers and pedestrians are urged to pay special attention to temporary signage and to UMass Medical School Public Safety officers who will be on site to help manage the flow of traffic during this time.
