The UMass Medical School Alumni Association welcomed 126 new members on Friday, May 31, at the annual alumni breakfast, as the School of Medicine Class of 2019 and faculty members were recognized for outstanding achievement.

“I am amazed and humbled by your tremendous accomplishments. Your individual and collective academic achievements; your service to your patients and your community; your compassion, kindness and humility are inspiring,” said Sonia Chimienti, MD, associate professor of medicine, associate dean for student affairs and vice provost for student life and enrollment.

Kent B. Lewandrowski, MD, SOM ’86, president of the UMass Medical School Alumni Association, encouraged graduates to commit to lifelong learning and to give back to their communities and university in a meaningful and lasting way.

Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor in Medical Education, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the School of Medicine, said that while he may not remember his own graduation from medical school, he will never forget his first night as a resident, helping to deliver and care for triplets, born at 28 weeks, in the NICU of Johns Hopkins.

“I remember every detail of that night. I think this mostly because of the relationship we developed with the care team there and getting to know the little girls and their mother,” Dean Flotte said. “You will all experience a wonderful event like that soon.”

Before awarding the Chancellor’s Award to Katherine Mallett, Chancellor Michael F. Collins congratulated all of the award recipients and acknowledged the “incredibly gifted faculty” who have encouraged and helped to guide the class through medical school and toward their careers.

“It has been an enormous privilege to watch your careers develop, to get to know you and be witness to your many accomplishments,” Chancellor Collins said. “We look forward to following your careers into the future.”

During a special ceremony held at the breakfast’s conclusion, U.S. Air Force Lt. Maxwell Kruse, a member of the Class of 2019 who matched in emergency medicine at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base, was promoted to the rank of captain after an oath ceremony conducted by U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard, Brigadier Gen. Sean Collins, PhD, assistant professor of nursing in the Graduate School of Nursing and a GSN alum.
