J. Matthias Walz, MD, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine, as announced by Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor of Medical Education, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Walz, an associate professor of anesthesiology & perioperative medicine and surgery, has served as acting chair during the time that included the absence of the late chair and professor Shubjeet Kaur, MD, who passed away earlier this year.

“Dr. Walz is an esteemed caregiver and educator whose numerous clinical and administrative leadership roles include serving as academic vice chair for the department, and associate chief medical officer for UMass Memorial Medical Center,” said Dean Flotte. “He is highly collaborative and engaged in patient care, teaching, research and mentoring faculty and trainees; and has led or co-led a number of grant-funded projects aimed at improving clinical care, many of which have resulted in peer-reviewed publications.”

Walz joined the UMMS community 18 years ago, completing his internship, a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in critical care medicine here before joining the faculty in 2005.

“In due time, a decision will be made about the selection of a permanent chair of the department. Please join us in thanking Dr. Walz for his leadership; we are confident that he will continue to make meaningful contributions to our academic health sciences community well into the future,” said Flotte.
