Educational Recognition Awards on April 26 to honor teaching excellence

Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Teaching recipient Anne Gilroy to deliver Last Lecture

In an annual tradition that includes words of wisdom from an esteemed teacher and recognition of members of the community who serve as mentors, teachers and advisors, the 20th annual Educational Recognition Awards ceremony will be held at UMass Medical School on Thursday, April 26. The awards ceremony will recognize 37 faculty members and fellows for excellence in teaching. The award presentations will be followed with the Last Lecture.

Anne Gilroy, MA, professor emeritus of radiology in the Division of Translational Anatomy, will deliver the Last Lecture “Looking Forward Through the Rearview Mirror.”

Presenting the lecture is an honor associated with the Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Teaching, which Gilroy received at Convocation 2017 in September. Gilroy also received the Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching, which honors one outstanding faculty member from each of the five campuses of the University of Massachusetts.

Gilroy is a co-author of the internationally acclaimed Thieme’s Atlas of Anatomy, the author of Anatomy – An Essential Textbook, and editor of the recently released Anatomy in Your Pocket. As the founding director of anatomy and imaging resources for the UMMS Integrated Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation, she was instrumental in the medical school’s acquisition of the state-of-the-art digital simulation Anatomage table and its integration into the medical curriculum. Previous teaching recognitions include multiple Outstanding Medical Educator Awards, two Educational Achievement Awards and the Lamar Soutter Award for Excellence in Medical Education.

Prior to The Last Lecture, faculty members from the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Graduate School of Nursing will be recognized for their contributions to the academic life of UMass Medical School.

The awards ceremony and lecture will take place in the Albert Sherman Center Auditorium on the second floor from 4 to 6 p.m. A reception will follow.
