Lawrence Rosenthal, MD, PhDLawrence Rosenthal Discusses Success of New Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation in Spectrum News 1 Interview

Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a common heart condition that causes irregular and rapid heartbeats, affects millions of people worldwide. To help manage the symptoms of AFib, a new treatment called pulsed field ablation has shown promising results for patients at UMass Memorial Medical Center. Lawrence Rosenthal, MD, PhD, professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and director of Electrophysiology and Pacing, recently performed this new procedure on a patient at UMass, resulting in a successful outcome.

“We access three veins in the patient’s groin, their femoral veins, and through those veins we put three specific catheters into the heart itself,” said Dr. Rosenthal. “This procedure is now a daily occurrence at the hospital.”
