Chancellor Michael F. Collins believes the nation should unite around the children separated from their parents at the United States’ border, calling for Americans to send nurses, physicians and mental health specialists as well as clothing and food to their aid, according to his June 22 op-ed in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
“The simple fact is that ending family separations is not enough,” Chancellor Collins said, of President Trump’s executive order on June 20 to stop taking children away from parents seeking asylum at the border. More than 2,000 children were separated from families and sent to detention facilities recently, under the president’s direction, before the practice was ended. But it is unknown when the families will be reunited. “Now that we are in this situation, let us, as a nation, begin to care for these children.”
“Just as we do after natural or manmade disasters, Americans are at our best when we are helping those in need.”
