Center for Tobacco Treatment Research and Training

Training and Certification

The Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) Training and Certification Program* is the cornerstone of the educational activities in the Center. The program began in 1999, offering training exclusively to Massachusetts providers. In 2001 it was expanded to include participants from outside of the state and in 2003 we began providing the training at out-of-state venues. The training includes two components.

Basic Skills for Working with Smokers, is primarily an online course, that can be completed as a stand-alone course and is also a pre-requisite for the TTS Core Training.

TTS Core Training is an intensive 4-day program, conducted in-person.

TTS Certification is an optional process that includes completing both training courses, a written exam, documentation of practice hours and a case study. To date we have enrolled over 4000 participants in Basic Skills, trained over 1200 participants in Core Training and certified 225 TTSs. This training program has also provided the base for many customized trainings conducted throughout Massachusetts and across the country.
