Nephrology Fellowship Program
The Division of Renal Medicine offers a two-year fellowship in nephrology. Three candidates are selected each year. First-year fellows spend the majority of their time rotating on clinical services at UMMMC. The curriculum is designed to give each fellow balanced exposure to consultative nephrology, dialysis, and transplantation. During the second year, fellows mix a less intense schedule of clinical responsibilities with research. All fellows have a continuity clinic in which they are precepted by a designated faculty member.
The goal of the program is to develop board eligible nephrologists with a solid grounding in clinical and scientific aspects of their discipline. Fellows are also expected to be proficient in the therapeutic oversight of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy (CVVH), immunomodulatory therapy for transplant patients, placement of intravenous catheters for dialysis access, and percutaneous renal biopsy.
The program is fully accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The educational progress of all fellows in the Electrophysiology Fellowship program are evaluated using the techniques recommended by the ACGME. Fellows also have the opportunity to evaluate the program and participating attendings. Fellows’ duty hours are kept in compliance with ACGME guidelines.
