Department of Medicine
Division of Hospital Medicine
Welcome
Hospitalists have played an important role in patient care at our medical center for over ten years. In July of 1996, the University of Massachusetts Medical Center became one of the first major teaching hospitals in the United States to develop a hospitalist group.
With the amalgamation of UMMC and the Memorial Hospital to form UMass Memorial Medical Center, the size and scope of our hospitalist practice were greatly expanded. Today, the division of Hospital Medicine is one of the largest divisions in the Department of Medicine, comprising 28 physicians and attending over 29,000 patient visits per year.
Members of the Hospital Medicine division play an extremely important role in education of residents in the inpatient setting at UMMMC. Many also precept medical students in their physical diagnosis course. A sub-internship in hospital medicine is offered to senior medical students. A fellowship program in Hospital Medicine is planned to begin in July, 2007.
