Division of Plastic Surgery
The Plastic Surgery Residency Program at UMass Chan Medical School is designed to provide residents with extensive clinical training, a comprehensive didactic experience and meaningful opportunities to engage with UMass Chan research programs.

The six-year integrated program trains residents in the full spectrum of plastic surgery and provides them with the tools to both collaborate with other surgical subspecialists and pursue further fellowship training. The initial two years involve training in plastic surgery, general surgery and surgical subspecialties aimed at providing a broad, interdisciplinary surgical exposure. This involves education in plastic surgery, as well as the related fields of anesthesiology, burn management, critical care medicine, dermatology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecologic oncology, neurosurgery, oculoplastic surgery, oncologic surgery, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery, pediatric surgery, thoracic surgery, transplant surgery, trauma management, urology and vascular surgery. The training lays the foundation for attaining broad surgical knowledge before four years of concentrated plastic surgery training, which includes one year of chief resident responsibility. During these years, residents complete rotations in acute plastic surgery, burn/wound, head and neck/craniofacial and aesthetic surgery.
The goal of the program is to prepare residents for success in their career of choice at the completion of their training.

Two PGY-1 residents are accepted into the integrated program each year through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Applications to the program will be accepted through either the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) or the Plastic Surgery Common Application (PSCA).
Acceptance into the residency program requires the following:
1) Licensing in the state of Massachusetts requires passage of both USMLE Part I and USMLE Part II CK;
2) U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (we only accept J-1 visas sponsored by the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG));
3) International medical graduates must possess a valid ECFMG certificate;
4) International medical graduates must be recent graduates of medical school; and
5) Significant clinical experience in the United States or Canada with supporting letters of reference.
UMass Chan Medical School does not offer observerships or externships.
The prerequisite requirements of the American Board of Plastic Surgery are as follows:
Residents must have a medical or osteopathic degree granted in the United States or Canada by an institution accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Graduates of allopathic medical schools in the United States or Canada accredited by the LCME who have successfully completed the licensure requirements in a United States jurisdiction are deemed to have appropriate undergraduate medical credentials.
Graduates of medical schools from countries other than the United States or Canada must present evidence of final certification by the ECFMG.
