TIA Facts

  • About 12% of all strokes are preceded by a TIA, based on retrospective patient reports.
  • Many patients who experience TIA-like symptoms fail to inform their healthcare providers.
  • Short-term risk of stroke and other vascular events following a TIA has historically been reported as high as 10% at 2 days, and as high as 17% at 90 days. However at least one more recent study reports much lower rates, perhaps reflecting better and faster evaluation of acute TIA and implementation of secondary stroke prevention strategies in the study population.
