Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology

  • ESIR program at UMass will offers 1 ESIR position per resident PGY level
  • All candidates will be chosen based upon
    • Preparedness
    • Ability
    • Aptitude
    • Residency performance
    • Academic credentials as reflected in the application
    • Interviews by faculty members
  • The program director and selection committee will approve acceptances for applicants during the spring of their PGY3 year
  • The ESIR resident will have, at minimum, 4 four-week IR blocks and 1 IR related rotation in the PGY2-4 years
  • During PGY5 year the resident will have 7 fourweek IR blocks plus 2 IR related rotations
  • The ESIR resident will complete at total of 14 weeks of IR and IR related rotations through their PGY5 year (see block diagram attached)
  • The average 4 week case volume for an IR resident at UMass is approximately 125 cases, thus the IR volume alone will equate to approx 1500 cases through PGY5
  • IR related rotations are:
    • Vascular Lab (vascular ultrasound)
    • Vascular Surgery
    • MSK Procedures
    • Critical Care (SICU)
    • Non-Vascular Interventional Radiology (body procedures)
    • Breast Intervention
    • Neurointerventional Radiology
