Consultative Services

Our dermatopathology service is housed in a state of the art facility and processes over 15,000 skin specimens from dermatology clinics at UMass as well as from other dermatology practices in central MA.  The services we provide include:

  • Light microscopic examination and interpretation of specimens from skin that are routinely processed and H&E stained, with further special stains if indicated, including PAS, Gram, mucin, AFB, Fite, Giemsa, melanin, elastin and trichrome.
  • Immunohistochemistry studies.
  • Immunofluorescent studies for immunoblistering and other autoimmune disorders.
  • Molecular and cytogenetic studies, including T and B-lymphocyte clonality analysis and FISH.
  • Ultrastructural study
  • Clinicopathological correlation
  • Consultation

Specimen Delivery and Requirements 

  • Paraffin block or unstained slides and one H&E
  • Tissue fixed in 10% Neutral buffered formalin
  • Tissue fixed in Zeus fixative (for immunofluorescence studies)
