Our lab is investigating the biological roles of transition metals, such as Cu+, Zn2+, Co2+, and Mn2+, in the development of mammalian cells. Transition metals are micronutrients that are required as co-factors in metalloenzymes. However, high levels of transition metals are a potential hazard to the cells due to their chemical reactivity. Due to their critical cellular roles functions and potential toxicity, transition metals are fundamental to cell function. Metals are necessary for cell growth and establishment of differentiated phenotypes. Our lab, investigate the role of transition metals in the proliferation and differentiation of muscle cells using primary myoblasts derived from mouse satellite cells as a model.
