Doctoring and Clinical Skills Small Group Faculty

The doctoring and clinical skills (DCS) Small Group Leaders are key longitudinal faculty in Vista. These small group leaders will work in pairs and facilitate consistent small groups of students in 33 Wednesday sessions during the Vista discovery phase. These sessions may be in the morning or afternoon, and the schedule is published in advance for faculty and students to use for planning purposes. Preferred commitment is at least 3-years.

This curriculum focuses on foundational patient communication skills and relationship-building including establishing rapport, practicing cultural humility, active listening and responding to emotion. Communication in interprofessional teams is also included in the content of these small group sessions with a focus on giving and receiving feedback professionally and documenting and presenting the patient encounter.  Later topics include clinical problem solving and more advanced communication.

Small Group facilitators will:

• facilitate consistent small groups of students on Wednesdays during the Vista discovery phase.
• review and respond to student weekly reflections and provide assessments of students on a variety of skills.
• participate in faculty development weekly
• contribute to the annual revision and update of at least one session to promote ongoing curriculum improvement and maintain timeliness of resources.
• occasionally facilitate hospital sessions or physical diagnosis sessions (also on Wednesdays) for clinicians and medical school interviews for non-clinicians to meet the full supported time.

Healthcare providers, behavioral health providers and those connected with medical education in other ways are welcome to apply. Successful small group leaders are interested in individual student development over time, enthusiastic about facilitating discussion about communication skills and patient relationships and are willing to participate in other medical school activities to reach the full supported time.
