Curriculum & Applicant Requirements

Thank you for your interest in the University of Massachusetts fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS).  The UMass FPMRS fellowship is a 3-year program which offers an integrated pelvic floor dysfunction experience and curriculum including vaginal, laparoscopic, robotic, and abdominal surgical approaches to surgical management of pelvic floor dysfunction. There are currently three surgeons and one nurse practitioner faculty in the Urogynecology Division. Fellows will gain experience in non-surgical approaches to pelvic floor dysfunction such as pessary management, behavioral management and pelvic floor physical therapy. There are rotations in urology, colorectal surgery, and plastic surgery with experiences in physical therapy and electrophysiology. Fellows currently spend two surgical days per month at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with three FPMRS faculty there and our plan is to expand this relationship.  The FPMRS fellows interact extensively with the Ob/Gyn residency program as clinical and classroom educators. Current research focuses on surgical outcomes and predictors, but collaboration with the extensive basic-science and translational research resources of UMass Chan Medical School and Worcester Polytechnic Institute is growing.

The UMass FPMRS Fellowship program was accredited by the American Board of Obstetricians Gynecologists (ABOG) in 2007 and by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 2014.  It is approved for two fellows for three years. The fellowship curriculum  has been designed to follow the General and Special Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in the Subspecialty of Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery as well as the Guide to Learning in Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery

Other Degrees or Curricula Offered: There is an opportunity to enroll in a Masters in Clinical Investigation or the Masters in Public Health degree programs through the medical school which can be completed during the three year fellowship.
