Jim Glasheen, PhD, who has led UMass Medical School’s innovation and business development enterprise since 2017, will depart the Medical School in the new year, Chancellor Michael F. Collins has announced.
Under Dr. Glasheen’s leadership, the Offices of Technology Management and Business Development and Innovation came together to form BRIDGE, a team that supports the UMMS research enterprise, creates comprehensive business strategies, and leverages discoveries and scientific advances.
“I appreciate the deep expertise Jim possesses—developed during his more than 15 years as a prominent venture capitalist in the biopharmaceutical, medical technology and patient-centered health fields—and the skill with which he has applied this acumen on behalf of UMMS. Our research community and institution are unquestionably enriched by his many contributions,” said Chancellor Collins.
As executive vice chancellor, Glasheen has overseen a robust growth in licensing revenue at UMMS. In March, the University of Massachusetts was ranked fourth among all U.S. institutions and third among universities by the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) for generating income from the licensing of faculty-derived discoveries and products.
“During his tenure, Jim has also expanded the capacity of our technology management and business development teams; established a Cambridge footprint to showcase UMMS researchers; began the Lunch and Learn Series; launched the BRIDGE Fund to support projects by UMMS faculty whose research shows promise for commercialization and translation to a clinical application; and, through BRIDGE SPAN, enhanced mutually beneficial partnerships between our research community and industry sponsors,” said Collins.
“Our mutual goal is to ensure a smooth transition of this position. With the support of the Park Square executive search firm, the process of identifying and selecting a successor to lead our Office of Technology Management and business development efforts will commence.”
