Lisa Gussak, MD, will be the first UMass Medical School Artist in Residence of 2020. Her photography exhibit Noticing is on display at the Lamar Soutter Library from Jan. 2 through Feb. 27.

Drawn to colors and patterns in nature, Dr. Gussak, associate professor of family medicine & community health, began taking pictures with her first smart phone. Noticing presents the detailed perspective and focus of the artist’s close observation of hardscapes and softscapes.

“Paying closer attention to my environment, noticing details of sidewalks, plants and pavement has informed my doctoring and vice versa,” wrote Gussak in her artist’s statement. “The current practice of medicine challenges clinicians to balance their attention between the patient, the computer and the massive amount of information presented to them every day. Photography enhances my ability to notice what is happening around me.”

Launched by the library in 2006, the Artist in Residence series is presented to enhance and enrich the cultural environment for the entire medical school community and showcase the artistic talent of members and associates of the UMass Medical School Community. Exhibits have spanned diverse mediums, including paint, photography and textiles; and diverse subjects ranging from landscapes to abstract designs. Many of the artists channel their creativity to reflect on themes relevant to health care.
