The Worcester Telegram and Gazette and TV3 Worcester News Tonight captured the excitement as UMass Medical School celebrated World Autism Awareness Day with its annual Light it Up Blue event on Tuesday, April 2.

Charter TV3 Worcester News Tonight spoke with David Cochran, MD, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry and medical director for the UMMS Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (CANDO), and families attending the event.

“I hope for those others who do have autism to be able to reach their goals and have a happy, healthy life,” said Finn Ellia, 11, who receives support from Dr. Cochran and other professionals at CANDO.

Telegram & Gazette photographer Ashley Green snapped as the crowd gathered for the main event at dusk, when the facade of the Albert Sherman Center was bathed in blue light.

Light It Up Blue is an international event dedicated to raising awareness about autism each year on World Autism Day. Since 2010, the Shriver Center for Developmental Disabilities and the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at UMass Medical School have joined with thousands of institutions and individuals across the globe to shine bright blue lights in honor of the millions of individuals and families affected by autism.
