Chimienti appointed SOM associate dean for student affairs

Chair of Educational Policy Committee takes on new role with medical students

Sonia Chimienti, MD, clinical associate professor of medicine, will serve as the new associate dean for student affairs for the School of Medicine, Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs Michele Pugnaire, MD, has announced. Dr. Chimienti will begin her new role on June 1.

“In her role as associate dean, Dr. Chimienti will be the institutional leader for student affairs in the School of Medicine,” said Dr. Pugnaire, professor of family medicine & community health. “Through ongoing engagement with school leadership, learning community mentors, the faculty and, above all, our students, she will oversee a number of critical services for the School of Medicine, including the medical student performance evaluation; student advocacy and wellness; advancement of diversity and inclusion; academic progress; and standards of integrity and professionalism for medical students.”

“Building on her exemplary service as chair of the Educational Policy Committee and her work as a pre-clinical course director, a Learning Communities mentor, director of the medicine sub-internship, and fellowship program director in infectious diseases, Dr. Chimienti brings an impressive breadth of experience to this leadership role,” said Pugnaire. “She has been a longstanding advocate for student engagement, continuous quality improvement and innovation in our educational programs. Her knowledge, experience, values and skills will ensure the highest quality of ongoing development and innovation in our student programs.”

For the past two years, the Office of Student Affairs has been led on an interim basis by Michael Kneeland, MD. Dr. Kneeland returns to his previous responsibilities as associate dean for interprofessional education and allied health.
