Video: Chancellor welcomes new medical students to ‘a very special community’

In a welcome address to the School of Medicine Class of 2018, Chancellor Michael F. Collins highlighted the overall academic strength of the class, and the great lengths students have taken to serve their communities.

“You are really an incredibly competitive class. The truth is the numbers are outstanding,” Chancellor Collins told students on their first day at UMass Medical School. “But it’s really what you’ve done and the contributions that you’ve already made, the service commitments that you’ve lived, that brought you here.”

Collins said that it is an extraordinary privilege to lead the institution and welcome the new students, adding that they are privileged as well.

“The opportunity that you’ve been given represents one of the greatest privileges of your life—which is to be given the opportunity to care for someone else,” said Collins.
