Susanne Muehlschlegel, MD, MPH (Principal Investigator)

Dr. Susanne Muehlschlegel is a Professor at the UMass Chan Medical School and practices as an attending in the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit. She is dedicated to improving the lives and outcomes of patients with neurological emergencies and their families through passionate care at the bedside, research and teaching.blobid0.jpg

Her research interests focus on studying outcomes after catastrophic neurological injuries, in particular moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, and improving the process of prognostication and goals-of-care decisions for neurocritically ill patients through Shared Decision Making. She holds funding from the NIH (Eunice Kennedy Shriver Institute/NICHD). She has previously been funded by the American Heart Association, Worcester Research Foundation and the UMASS Faculty Scholar award. She is currently the site-PI and co-investigator for several NIH-funded clinical trials on various diseases treated in the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit. She has previously designed and directed an investigator initiated Phase IIa trial using Dantrolene in Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Dr. Muehlschlegel is a Member of the Board of Directors for the Neurocritical Care Society, and additionally serves on several committees (Women in Neurocritical Care, Research fellowship grant taskforce committee, Research committee, and the NCS Annual Meeting “Fun Run for Research” Committee [chair]) in this society. She also serves as a fellow on the American Academy of Neurology. For several years she was councilor of the Critical Care and Emergency Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology and also served on its Executive Committee.

Dr. Muehlschlegel is an ad-hoc reviewer on grant applications for the National Institutes of Health and the Neurocritical Care Society Research Fellowship Grant, as well as multiple research journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Neurology, STROKE, Neurocritical Care, Journal of Intensive Care Medicine, Journal of Neurotrauma, Journal of Neuroimaging, Neuroscience, PLOS Medicine, NEUROLOGY Clinical Practice, and several others.

She has been inducted as Fellow of the Neurocritical Care Society and Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine.

Besides being a neurointensivist and researcher, Dr. Muehlschlegel enjoys mentoring students, residents and junior faculty on career development locally and nationally, and has repeatedly lectured on this topic at national conferences.
