UMass Researchers Win Prestigious Macula Society Research Grant

Date Posted: Saturday, February 24, 2018

Dr. Shlomit Schaal and Dr. Hemant Khanna have been awarded a competitive grant from The Macula Society. The grant funds are supported by Regeneron. As part of this grant, the investigators will examine the molecular mechanisms by which the structure and function of our light-sensing cells called cone photoreceptors decline during retinal degenerative diseases.

As our cones are responsible for the bulk of our vision and visual acuity, this research will identify new pathways to develop novel treatments that will improve the quality of life of patients. The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the UMass Chan Medical School is honored to be among the great institutes of vision research that were recognized by the Macula Society.
