Meet Our Fellows

Name: Alina Adeel

Hometown: I grew up in Pakistan and attended Aga Khan University in Karachi.
Medical School: I did my residency in Internal Medicine at Michigan State University in Grand Rapids, then worked as a hospitalist in Chicago suburbs for a few years before coming to UMass.
About Me: I’m currently pursuing my MPH here at UMass with a focus on HIV infection in ethnic and racial minorities. In addition to HIV, I’m interested in infections in other immunocompromised hosts, with a goal of for Transplant ID as a career path. I enjoys spending my free time engaging my artistic side by sketching, calligraphy and glass painting.

Name: Aji Njie

About Me: I was born and raised in The Gambia, West Africa, and graduated from School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, Banjul The Gambia in 2012. I did my Internal Medicine residency at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center (DMC). I stayed on as a PGY 4 chief resident at DMC before joining UMass for fellowship in 2019. I have a special interests in tuberculosis. Outside medicine, I enjoy cooking, traveling and spending quality time with family and friends.

Name: Ming Da Qu

Hometown: I’m originally from Guangzhou, China, and grew up in Florida.
Medical School: I graduated from the University of Florida with dual degrees in microbiology and chemistry, then went to the University of South Florida for medical school. I moved to Worcester to complete internal medicine residency at UMass.
More About Me:  I plan to be primarily a clinician with focuses on infection control, nosocomial pathogen virulence diagnostics, and HIV. My non-career interests include music (performance and listening), learning and reading, and eating whatever sounds interesting.

Name: Mohamad Al Kateb

Medical School: I received my medical degree from Cairo University. I then moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada where I worked in the research and teaching fields at Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine. Following that, I moved to Boston for postdoctoral infectious disease research on Clostridium difficile at Brigham and Women's Hospital. I then went on to my internal medicine residency training at University of Central Florida.
More About Me: Before coming to UMass, I served as chief resident at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, Colorado. I like playing soccer with my daughter, cooking, and discovering natural parks across Canada and the United States.

Name: Mohmmad Hajjiri

Hometown: I was born and raised in Jordan
Medical School: I graduated from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2004. I completed my internal medicine residency at Akron General Medical Center/Cleveland Clinic in 2010.
More About Me: I’ve worked in both primary care and hospital medicine settings before starting my fellowship, and have been at UMass since 2018. During my time here, I have completed my Green belt LEAN project and Quality Scholars program. I also served as a POD leader with the office of clinical integration at UMass Memorial.

Name: Derrick Yu

Medical School: My undergraduate studies were at UC Berkeley and I worked as an EMT and ED technician for several years before pursuing medical school at Touro University in Nevada. I completed residency at College Medical Center in California and served as Chief Resident.
More About Me: I found the field of ID fascinating and the constantly evolving aspect continues to captivate my interest. I am now in my second year of fellowship and am grateful for my time at UMass. I have grown to love the hiking trails in Worcester and snow sports in the winter.
