Welcome to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program at UMass Chan Medical School. Our mission is to launch the careers of academic gastroenterologists by providing a broad foundation in clinical gastroenterology and hepatology alongside training in research and teaching.

A Letter from the Program Director

The UMass Chan GI Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited, three-year training program located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Four applicants match every year to highly competitive positions and are immediately immersed in our robust clinical environment. Over their years of training, fellows fulfill various inpatient and outpatient-based clinical duties; expand their knowledge of the relevant physiology and pathology via clinical work, academic conferences, self-directed learning, and teaching; participate in scholarly activities, including research projects and quality improvement efforts; and master the techniques involved with various endoscopic procedures.

Over the course of three years, the schedule gets progressively more individualized and flexible for senior fellows, allowing for opportunities to focus on individual career-oriented interests. The first year is more heavily focused on inpatient care, and over the years, fellows dedicate more time to the longitudinal management of diverse gastrointestinal and liver diseases in the outpatient setting. One of the cornerstones of GI training is learning endoscopic procedures, and the sheer volume seen at UMass Memorial Medical Center guarantees that you will scope. Talented faculty provide a comprehensive arsenal of procedures and interventions, and fellows are exposed to all of them.

Equally important is our dedication to supporting fellows’ scholarly efforts. All fellows are required to have academic, scholarly pursuits; opportunities, resources, and mentorship are available for fellows interested in clinical trials, QI-oriented projects, and translational or basic science research. Fellows are encouraged to develop their own ideas and implement them under the guidance of faculty investigators and have the chance to take the lead on their projects as they coordinate assignments with students and residents. All fellows select an "Area of Distinction", and their schedules are tailored to allow for supplemental clinical and academic experiences in their chosen field of focus.

Our leadership and faculty take immense pride in preparing our fellows for a fulfilling career. No matter the setting, our alumni have done extremely well. Forty percent of graduates from the last decade are affiliated with an academic medical center. Many of our alumni have roles in leadership within their practices or institutions. Current fellows benefit from connecting with our graduates as resources through evolving alumni networking initiatives. Graduates consistently report feeling more prepared than their colleagues when dealing with clinical scenarios and endoscopic cases.

Thank you very much for your interest in the UMass Chan Gastroenterology Fellowship program. You are welcome to explore our website to learn more about the fellowship and UMass Chan. Students, residents, and fellows can also find information on how to arrange for an elective rotation with us if interested.
