Orientation Block is our process to provide each resident an opportunity to have a ‘strong start’ in residency. A PGY1 year built from numerous rotations in diverse specialties with limited time in the family medicine home can be stressful disorienting. The primary goal is integration of the new residents with an extended exposure to the health center, the core faculty, to senior resident mentors, and to each other. The outcome is a cohesive, mutually supportive group!

There is a healthy blend of immersion in clinical work at our community health center and on our inpatient service while also offering an opportunity for early electives for exposure to an area of interest or to build greater skills on our core service sites. All six new residents will work together at least three afternoons each week in site visits and workshops to prepare for the various core rotations. The extended block permits a pleasant introduction to our electronic information systems without all-day training marathons. Residents also work with our internal behavioral health team, practice administration, referral coordinators, and hospital support staff. Everyone is ready to hit the ground running.
