The Fitchburg Family Medicine Residency has long been a key source of compassionate care for the poor and underserved in our area of North Central Massachusetts. In 2002, we became the medical service for a new federally chartered community health center (CHC Family Health Center), and this has allowed us to become far better equipped to manage this challenging responsibility. Through directly accessing Federal programs and participating in regional and national initiatives such as the Health Disparities Collaborative, we are in the forefront of a national movement to systematically improve care for the underserved.
CHC Family Health is the result of collaborative efforts of a community board, UMass Memorial Health Care, UMass Medical School, Fitchburg Family Medicine, and federal, state, and local officials to create a community-owned health center to meet the demands for increased services and access to medical care in the North Central Massachusetts area. The UMass Fitchburg Family Medicine and residency program have become part of this new center.
We realize that good intentions are necessary but not sufficient in serving the underserved - we teach respect for all patients as an unwavering requirement and we attempt to model that respect by treating all involved with our Residency, from attendings to support staff, with similar respect.
