A Day in the Life of a Surgeon

Left to right, Dr. Olaumoke (Jummy) Megafu and Dr. Emily Fan

More than 60 college students from across Massachusetts attended the inaugural “A Day in the Life of a Surgeon” event held on November 11, 2022. This initiative was the first of the DEI Surgical initiatives. The concept was originated by Olaumoke (Jummy) Megafu, MD and organized by both Dr. Megafu and Emily Fan, MD. The goal is to give college students who are underrepresented in medicine the opportunity to learn about the surgical field, gain exposure to specialties, and seek mentorship and guidance in pursuing this field. Over the course of the day, students listen to a panel of specialists across the surgical subspecialties; observe a livestream of a surgical case, discuss the cases with attending surgeons; tour the Medical School and surgical facilities; and get hands-on experience in the simulation lab.
