Watch: 2023 news in review at UMass Chan

UMass Chan Medical School celebrated its 50th commencement, welcomed its largest Medical School class and formalized an agreement to create a second regional campus in Burlington in 2023.

UMass Chan researchers announced a gene therapy milestone for Cockayne syndrome, developed a therapy that restores production of a protein in cell samples taken from patients with fragile X syndrome and were visited by a young patient who is one of the first to receive an investigational gene therapy for Canavan disease developed at UMass Chan. The new education and research building was made weather-tight and is being readied for June 2024 opening.

UMass Chan faculty, staff and students continued to be involved in the communities in which they work and live, volunteering 1,768 community service hours through the UMass Chan Cares Volunteer Initiative in fiscal year 2023. The 25th annual UMass Cancer Walk presented by Harr Toyota raised more than $735,000 for cancer research.

UMass Chan was named one of The Boston Globe’s Top Places to Work for the second year in a row and was also honored for its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. Two impactful Diversity and Inclusion Office events returned to campus in 2023: the Diversity Summit and the Multicultural Women’s Health Summit.
