Hiring and Recruiting - Mar 6, 2-4 PM
Hiring and Recruiting: inclusive strategies and working effectively within the UMass system
This session will be an opportunity to gain valuable insights into inclusive and equitable hiring and recruiting strategies for your research groups, engage with a moderated panel of experienced faculty and representatives from the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and DIO, and create actionable plans to fill open positions. Even if your lab is fully staffed now, this valuable discussion will provide useful practices that you can apply to address future staffing needs and is a great opportunity to share your experience with the rest of the cohort.
The following panelists have graciously agreed to join us for this session to share their expertise and strategies for hiring and recruiting:
- Tiffany Cook, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Education and Integration, Diversity and Inclusion Office (UMass Chan Profile; LinkedIn)
- Josué Flores Kim, Assistant Professor, Biochemistry and Molecular Biotechnology (lab website; UMass Chan Profile)
- Elinor Karlsson, Associate Professor, Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology (lab website; UMass Chan Profile; LinkedIn)
- Mary Ellen Lane, Dean, Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (UMass Chan Profile; LinkedIn)
- Marcus Ruscetti, Assistant Professor, Molecular Cell, and Cancer Biology (lab website; UMass Chan Profile; LinkedIn)
Preparation (optional): You are encouraged to bring a written staffing plan for the next ~two years of your research group to this session. Keep it as simple or detailed as you like and think about the projects you might propose for students, postdocs, and/or staff researchers, as well as other support needs. Make sure to include a timeline for bringing on staff to address these needs.
You are also encouraged to bring any questions you have regarding hiring and recruiting to this session. If you have any questions that you are not comfortable asking in person, please email them to Matthew.Schwartz3@umassmed.edu ahead of time so they can be posed to the panelists anonymously.
