EMS Page 2013

Stacy Weisberg, MD, MPH, FACEP, FAEMS Fellowship Director
John Broach, MD, MBA, MPH, EMS Division Director

The EMS Fellowship offered through UMass Chan Medical School in conjunction with UMass Memorial Medical Center, is a one year ACGME-accredited program designed to train the future medical directors and leaders in pre-hospital medicine. The fellowship accepts up to two fellows per year and is restricted to graduates of ACGME accredited residency programs.

UMMMC operates UMass Memorial Life Flight, an air medical critical care transport program. Life Flight is staffed with a nurse and critical care paramedic. As a fellow there is the opportunity to be involved in every facet of Life Flight operations. Fellows will share in the ongoing training and education of flight nurses and flight paramedics as well as participating in Life Flight’s continuous quality improvement efforts.

UMMMC also operates UMass Memorial EMS, the all ALS 911 provider for the city of Worcester and the town of Shrewsbury. With a call volume in excess of 30,000 per year, UMass Memorial EMS is the second busiest provider of 911 services in New England. Fellows will participate in paramedic education, quality improvement initiatives and will spend time in the field with paramedics.

The EMS Division provides medical direction and oversight for over fourteen EMS agencies in the community. EMS Fellows will participate in medical direction and oversight, under the supervision of the EMS faculty. EMS fellows will also be expected to participate in local, regional and statewide EMS planning and development.

The UMass Memorial EMS Division has a growing research program. The Division draws on the expertise available in the Department of Emergency Medicine, amongst the top NIH funded emergency departments in the country. On-going research includes investigation into endotracheal tube cuff pressures in the HEMS environment, prehospital capacity assessment, and hemodynamic monitoring in the HEMS environment.

Finally, UMass Memorial provides medical direction and support for the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (CEMLEC) SWAT team and the Massachusetts State Police STOP Team. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in training with these teams. The opportunity exists for well qualified individuals to apply to the team as a medical provider.
