Diversity Summit II Update and Recommendations Memo

November 2, 2016

Michael F. Collins, MD, Chancellor
Terence R. Flotte, MD, Executive Deputy Chancellor, Provost and Dean, T.H. Chan School of Medicine
Deborah L. Plummer, PhD, Vice Chancellor, Diversity and Inclusion

On November 2nd, more than eighty members of the UMass Chan community held the second Diversity Summit to review the progress of the Executive Council’s Ad Hoc Workgroup on Underrepresented Minorities in Academic Health Sciences.

The purpose was to review progress toward the shared and important goal of an inclusive teaching, learning and educational community that reflects a diverse population. This work builds on the initial meeting in May, when we committed to advancing 10 recommendations to enhance our institutional capacity for inclusion, recruitment, retention and development of a diverse student, faculty, resident physician, postdoctoral fellow and staff population.

We want to begin by commending the efforts of the workgroup, which was charged with making these recommendations into concrete and actionable plans. The level of engagement in this work was palpable: we reviewed data, heard about a number of successes, took hard looks at areas where as an institution we need to do more and, importantly, agreed that while we are doing much, there are many opportunities for us to do more.

In a number of areas, the recommendations will challenge us to make new and different choices – how we recruit, how we measure success, how we reward leaders who take these recommendations and make them priorities. You will not be surprised that in several areas – the student experience, professional employee recruitment, pipeline programs – we have achieved much. You will not be surprised, either, that in other areas, we have much we must do.

This work is less about numbers or data – although the data are important – and more about our willingness, as an institution, to hold ourselves accountable for increasing access to the rich educational, employment and research community that we ourselves enjoy. The presenters intentionally kept their reports short, focused and tightly constrained to the information necessary to take next steps. It was clear from their reports (which are available below) that we know what comes next.

But the workgroups can’t do this alone, any more than the Executive Council can, or the campus leadership, or any single entity. What we can do, together, is begin to move forward. So we have asked the workgroup leaders to work in collaboration with the Ad Hoc Committee to establish near-term priorities and identify the resources necessary to begin the work and present these plans to the campus community after the New Year. We owe it to the communities in which we live, work and study to do all we can to reflect the rich cultural fabric of this region and the commonwealth.
