Minority Academic Achievement Committee (MAAC) 2018

Monday, August 06, 2018

The MAAC makes recommendations to recruit and retain minority faculty and staff. The primary focus of the committee is to foster recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority faculty, residents, and staff. It also strides to help build an inclusive work environment through increased engagement of African American, Hispanic, and LGBT faculty and staff. The committee is co-chaired by José R. Lemos, PhD and Steven Stowe.

The MAAC has had a successful year in promoting its mission. MAAC members participated in the FDSP (Faculty Diversity Scholars Program) Oversight Board and provided feedback to the External Review commission evaluating the program. They also sponsored a welcome reception for new URM faculty, and continued playing a role in their Advisory Group. The MAAC facilitated getting the Hispanic Heritage Month Speaker, Ilan Stavans, to support Latino faculty and students. They met and presented ideas to Provost Flotte (their Executive Sponsor) on how to increase URM faculty at UMASS Medical School. This year they also helped URM students host the 4th New England Regional SACNAS meeting at UMASS Medical School. In the upcoming year, the MAAC hopes to recruit additional URM Faculty to UMMS that can support the committee’s efforts to provide more efficient ways of mentoring, recruitment, and retention strategies for URM faculty and staff. They also want to continue supporting the FDSP in collaboration with the DIO (Diversity and Inclusion Office) and OFA (Office of Faculty Affairs).

As of September, the MAAC will be welcoming a new co-chair, Sonia Ortiz-Miranda, as José Lemos, PhD retires.
